About the Museum

About Us At the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada we believe learning is child’s play. Based in the original Carson City Civic Auditorium, for over 30 years this historic building has played host to generations of Northern Nevada children and families.

The Children’s Museum inspires imagination and creativity through play-based learning experiences. At the Children’s Museum, children are encouraged to explore the world through interactive exhibitions and programs in the arts, sciences, and humanities.

Some of the worlds children explore when they enter the Museum include:
  • A mining sluice and mineral exhibition where children can go through the motions of sluicing for the treasure hiding in rocks and minerals just like the miners of the old west, learning more about the history and geology of Northern Nevada.
  • A reproduction of an old school room, where children experience, first hand, how school was taught 100 years ago.
  • An interactive area where open-ended and imaginative problem solving activities urge children to think out of the box.
  • The S.T.E.M. room (science, technology, engineering and math room) filled with learning modules designed to spark the imagination, while learning about the practicalities of the world.

In addition to its day to day operations, the Museum has several weekly programs:
  • The Art Room is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 3 p.m., offering hands-on art making activities for all ages.
  • Story Time Adventures, a program that takes place every Tuesday and Friday morning at 9:30. Each morning adventure is themed and offers a story time paired with a related art activity with the flexibility to accommodate a variety of ages.
  • The Birthday Party Room - a rental program offering parents an opportunity to host their child’s birthday party at the Museum. The rental includes admission for party goers to all the activities the Museum has to offer, as well as a dedicated birthday party room for the celebration.

School groups are always welcome at the Children’s Museum. The school tour program is designed to be highly engaging and age appropriate learning opportunities are available for prekindergarten to 5th grade students. The Children’s Museum school tour programs are aligned with the Nevada Academic Content Standards.

As a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization, the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada receives no federal, state or local tax dollars, relying, instead, on private funds in the form of fund-raisers, grants, sponsorships, admissions, memberships, Museum Store sales and birthday parties to fund day-to-day operations, and new programs and exhibitions.
